THE ROAD TO RESILIENCY (Youth Presentation) 1.5 hours in length

Troy’s international bestselling book, ‘The Road to Resiliency’, is also a powerful and transformational school assembly or conference keynote. Troy explores youth wellness issues with students  such as divorce, bullying, abuse issues, self esteem and so much more. This program looks at the impact these factors have on personal wellness and how survivors of these elements can empower themselves to break these cycles and lead healthier, harmonious lives and find resilience. Resiliency is our ability to overcome or even be transformed by the damaging effects of adversity. Adversity discriminates against no one and impacts us all.

Using the power of storytelling and music, this keynote will teach participants what resiliency is and what resilient components we need to have in place in order to overcome adversity. Four tools will be introduced that can be incorporated into everyday life to help prepare for the adversity that lies ahead and to help diminish the adversity from the past.

The Road to Resiliency (Adult Presentation) 1.5 hours in length

It is a pivotal and beautiful moment in a child’s life when they connect with an adult and feel that someone really ‘sees’ them for the first time.  Most of us have been fortunate enough to have had that experience as children. Many years later, as adults, we are still able to reflect back to that moment – remembering the person who changed our story for the better.   Sometimes we take the time to share with that person the difference they made in our life, but so often, they are never told.  Despite not always seeing the immediate effects of our work with children, when we open our hearts, there is no doubt that we touch theirs.  With usually just a small gesture of kindness, quality time spent together, or a demonstration of compassion, we all hold the ability to be that light in a child’s life.

I remember clearly and with profound gratitude those moments in my life.  They came to me through the support of wonderful teachers, counselors, educational assistants, and school programs that opened my eyes to my true potential.  Those people likely didn’t realize at the time the impact they were having on shaping my future.  At the moment when they reached out to look beyond the surface of what they saw in me was the moment that they created an amazing ripple that has since extended beautifully in all directions.

As an adoptee and a child who experienced divorce, a life surrounded by alcoholism and drug addiction, and who endured severe abuse, neglect, and abandonment, I know the incredible impact that people in the helping profession and people in the community  can have on children. Every child has a story. Children today are confronted with so many adversities and challenges that can impact their personal wellness and influence the adults that they will grow up to be. These adversities can change a child’s life forever – so can overcoming them. Many adults who have survived a childhood of adversity still carry the pain and fear within them, which impact their relationships in careers, marriages, and as parents. Adversity excludes no one and continues to present itself in every phase of life.

What can we do as parents, counselors, educators, and members of our community to ensure that our children lead healthy, harmonious lives? What can you as a survivor of crisis do to break the cycles and the chains that hold you back from having a healthy, harmonious life? What can you do with the adversities you are facing right now?

To overcome adversity, we draw from three sources of resilient features: “I Have”, “I Am”, and “I Can”. This keynote elaborates on these concepts, teaching participants the resilient factors that we need to have in place in order to overcome crisis. Four tools will also be introduced that can be incorporated into our everyday lives to prepare us for the hardships that may lie ahead and help us to diminish the adversity from our past.

Using the power of storytelling and incorporating music, the keynote presentation “The Road to Resiliency” pays homage to those in the helping profession. It demonstrates the power each one of us has to make a difference in the lives of others and celebrates this opportunity.  It brings inspiration into fruition for all those who are bright lights in the lives of children.
